X.org X11 up to 6.8.2 setuid race condition

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

This vulnerability is listed as CVE-2006-4447. There is no available exploit. A patch should be applied to remediate this issue.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in X.org X11 up to 6.8.2 (Windowing System Software) and classified as critical. Affected by this issue is the function setuid. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a race condition vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-362. The product contains a code sequence that can run concurrently with other code, and the code sequence requires temporary, exclusive access to a shared resource, but a timing window exists in which the shared resource can be modified by another code sequence that is operating concurrently. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

X.Org and XFree86, including libX11, xdm, xf86dga, xinit, xload, xtrans, and xterm, does not check the return values for setuid and seteuid calls when attempting to drop privileges, which might allow local users to gain privileges by causing those calls to fail, such as by exceeding a ulimit.

The bug was discovered 06/20/2006. The weakness was presented 08/29/2006 by Dirk Mueller and Marcus Meissner (Website). The advisory is available at lists.freedesktop.org. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2006-4447 since 08/29/2006. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit.

It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 69 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 22287 (GLSA-200608-25 : X.org and some X.org libraries: Local privilege escalations), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Gentoo Local Security Checks and running in the context l.

Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at xorg.freedesktop.org. A possible mitigation has been published before and not just after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (29832), Tenable (22287), SecurityFocus (BID 19742†), OSVDB (28239†) and Secunia (SA21693†). If you want to get best quality of vulnerability data, you may have to visit VulDB.
