Details
A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, was found in QEMU (Virtualization Software) (the affected version is unknown). This affects the function qemu_clipboard_request of the component Built-In VNC Server. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a null pointer dereference vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-476. A NULL pointer dereference occurs when the application dereferences a pointer that it expects to be valid, but is NULL, typically causing a crash or exit. This is going to have an impact on availability. The summary by CVE is:
A flaw was found in the QEMU built-in VNC server while processing ClientCutText messages. The qemu_clipboard_request() function can be reached before vnc_server_cut_text_caps() was called and had the chance to initialize the clipboard peer, leading to a NULL pointer dereference. This could allow a malicious authenticated VNC client to crash QEMU and trigger a denial of service.
The weakness was presented 01/12/2024. The advisory is shared at access.redhat.com. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2023-6683 since 12/11/2023. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available.
