Details
A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, was found in Linux Kernel up to 6.0-rc2 (Operating System). This affects the function wb_inode_writeback_end of the file page-writeback.c. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a use after free vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-416. Referencing memory after it has been freed can cause a program to crash, use unexpected values, or execute code. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
A use-after-free flaw was found in the Linux Kernel. When a disk is removed, bdi_unregister is called to stop further write-back and waits for associated delayed work to complete. However, wb_inode_writeback_end() may schedule bandwidth estimation work after this has completed, which can result in the timer attempting to access the recently freed bdi_writeback.
The weakness was released 01/15/2024. The advisory is shared at access.redhat.com. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2024-0562 since 01/15/2024. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available. The price for an exploit might be around USD $0-$5k at the moment (estimation calculated on 11/15/2025).
