GnuTLS up to 3.8.2 RSA-PSK ClientKeyExchange information exposure

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Summaryinfo

A vulnerability classified as problematic was found in GnuTLS up to 3.8.2. This affects an unknown part of the component RSA-PSK ClientKeyExchange Handler. The manipulation results in information exposure. This vulnerability is cataloged as CVE-2024-0553. The attack may be launched remotely. There is no exploit available. Upgrading the affected component is advised.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, was found in GnuTLS up to 3.8.2 (Network Encryption Software). Affected is an unknown function of the component RSA-PSK ClientKeyExchange Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a information exposure vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-203. The product behaves differently or sends different responses under different circumstances in a way that is observable to an unauthorized actor, which exposes security-relevant information about the state of the product, such as whether a particular operation was successful or not. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality. CVE summarizes:

A vulnerability was found in GnuTLS. The response times to malformed ciphertexts in RSA-PSK ClientKeyExchange differ from the response times of ciphertexts with correct PKCS#1 v1.5 padding. This issue may allow a remote attacker to perform a timing side-channel attack in the RSA-PSK key exchange, potentially leading to the leakage of sensitive data. CVE-2024-0553 is designated as an incomplete resolution for CVE-2023-5981.

The weakness was shared 01/16/2024. The advisory is shared for download at gitlab.com. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2024-0553 since 01/15/2024. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1592.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 253531 (Linux Distros Unpatched Vulnerability : CVE-2024-0553), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.

Upgrading to version 3.8.3 eliminates this vulnerability. The upgrade is hosted for download at gnupg.org.

The vulnerability is also documented in the vulnerability database at Tenable (253531). VulDB is the best source for vulnerability data and more expert information about this specific topic.
