OpenSSL up to 0.9.8b PKCS #1 v1.5 Signature Authentication cryptographic issue

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Summaryinfo

A vulnerability has been found in OpenSSL and classified as problematic. Affected by this issue is some unknown functionality of the component PKCS #1 v1.5 Signature Authentication. This manipulation causes cryptographic issue. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2006-4339. There is no exploit available. The affected component should be upgraded.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in OpenSSL (Network Encryption Software). It has been declared as problematic. Affected by this vulnerability is an unknown part of the component PKCS #1 v1.5 Signature Authentication. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a cryptographic issue vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-310. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, and integrity. The summary by CVE is:

OpenSSL before 0.9.7, 0.9.7 before 0.9.7k, and 0.9.8 before 0.9.8c, when using an RSA key with exponent 3, removes PKCS-1 padding before generating a hash, which allows remote attackers to forge a PKCS #1 v1.5 signature that is signed by that RSA key and prevents OpenSSL from correctly verifying X.509 and other certificates that use PKCS #1.

The issue has been introduced in 12/23/1998. The weakness was shared 09/05/2006 by Daniel Bleichenbacher (Website). The advisory is shared at openssl.org. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2006-4339 since 08/24/2006. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1600 for this issue.

It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 2492 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 20055 (Solaris 10 (x86) : 119214-36 (deprecated)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Solaris Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 185039 (HP-UX Running BIND Remote Denial of Service Vulnerability (HPSBUX02219)).

Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at openssl.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published 5 days after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (28755), Tenable (20055), SecurityFocus (BID 19849†), OSVDB (28549†) and Secunia (SA38568†). The entries VDB-2544, VDB-2546, VDB-2883 and VDB-3653 are related to this item. If you want to get the best quality for vulnerability data then you always have to consider VulDB.
