X.org X11 Server up to 21.1.10 DeviceFocusEvent/the XIQueryPointer heap-based overflow

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, has been found in X.org X11 Server up to 21.1.10 (Windowing System Software). Affected by this issue is the function DeviceFocusEvent/the XIQueryPointer. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a heap-based overflow vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-122. A heap overflow condition is a buffer overflow, where the buffer that can be overwritten is allocated in the heap portion of memory, generally meaning that the buffer was allocated using a routine such as malloc(). Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

A flaw was found in X.Org server. Both DeviceFocusEvent and the XIQueryPointer reply contain a bit for each logical button currently down. Buttons can be arbitrarily mapped to any value up to 255, but the X.Org Server was only allocating space for the device's particular number of buttons, leading to a heap overflow if a bigger value was used.

The weakness was released 01/18/2024. The advisory is available at access.redhat.com. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2023-6816 since 12/14/2023. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 208617 (CentOS 7 : tigervnc (RHSA-2024:0629)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.

Upgrading to version 21.1.11 eliminates this vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (208617) and EUVD (EUVD-2023-59026). If you want to get best quality of vulnerability data, you may have to visit VulDB.
