Summary
A vulnerability labeled as critical has been found in libTIFF up to 3.7.1. Affected by this vulnerability is an unknown functionality. Executing a manipulation can lead to stack-based overflow. This vulnerability appears as CVE-2005-1544. In addition, an exploit is available. The affected component should be upgraded.
Details
A vulnerability has been found in libTIFF up to 3.7.1 (Image Processing Software) and classified as critical. This vulnerability affects an unknown part. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a stack-based overflow vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-121. A stack-based buffer overflow condition is a condition where the buffer being overwritten is allocated on the stack (i.e., is a local variable or, rarely, a parameter to a function). As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
Stack-based buffer overflow in libTIFF before 3.7.2 allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via a TIFF file with a malformed BitsPerSample tag.
The bug was discovered 05/10/2005. The weakness was presented 05/05/2005 by Tavis Ormandy (Website). The advisory is shared for download at security.gentoo.org. This vulnerability was named CVE-2005-1544 since 05/14/2005. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available.
It is possible to download the exploit at exploit-db.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 18233 (GLSA-200505-07 : libTIFF: Buffer overflow), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Gentoo Local Security Checks and running in the context l.
Upgrading to version 3.7.2 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 5 days after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
