A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, has been found in Autolab up to 2.11.x. This issue affects some unknown processing of the component Assessment Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a path traversal vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-22. The product uses external input to construct a pathname that is intended to identify a file or directory that is located underneath a restricted parent directory, but the product does not properly neutralize special elements within the pathname that can cause the pathname to resolve to a location that is outside of the restricted directory. Autolab is a course management service that enables instructors to offer autograded programming assignments to their students over the Web. Path traversal vulnerabilities were discovered in Autolab's assessment functionality in versions of Autolab prior to 2.12.0, whereby instructors can perform arbitrary file reads. Version 2.12.0 contains a patch. There are no feasible workarounds for this issue.
The weakness was published 01/22/2024 as GHSA-h8wq-ghfq-5hfx. The advisory is shared at github.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2023-44395 since 09/28/2023. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1006 for this issue.
