Details
A vulnerability classified as critical was found in POCO up to 1.11.8p1/1.12.5p1. This vulnerability affects the function Poco::UTF32Encoding::convert of the file UTF32Encoding.cpp. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a stack-based overflow vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-121. A stack-based buffer overflow condition is a condition where the buffer being overwritten is allocated on the stack (i.e., is a local variable or, rarely, a parameter to a function). As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
UTF32Encoding.cpp in POCO has a Poco::UTF32Encoding integer overflow and resultant stack buffer overflow because Poco::UTF32Encoding::convert() and Poco::UTF32::queryConvert() may return a negative integer if a UTF-32 byte sequence evaluates to a value of 0x80000000 or higher. This is fixed in 1.11.8p2, 1.12.5p2, and 1.13.0.
The weakness was released 01/27/2024 as 4320. The advisory is available at github.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2023-52389. Technical details and also a public exploit are known.
