Details
A vulnerability was found in FFmpeg up to 6.0 (Multimedia Processing Software) and classified as critical. Affected by this issue is some unknown processing of the component JJPEG XL Parser. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a integer overflow vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-190. The product performs a calculation that can produce an integer overflow or wraparound, when the logic assumes that the resulting value will always be larger than the original value. This can introduce other weaknesses when the calculation is used for resource management or execution control. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
Integer overflow vulnerability in FFmpeg before n6.1, allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via the JJPEG XL Parser.
The weakness was published 01/27/2024. The advisory is available at bugs.chromium.org. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2024-22862 since 01/11/2024. Successful exploitation requires user interaction by the victim. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not available.
Upgrading to version 6.1 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch ca09d8a0dcd82e3128e62463231296aaf63ae6f7 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at github.com. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.
