aio-libs aiohttp up to 3.9.1 Symbolic Links path traversal

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

The affected component should be upgraded.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability classified as problematic has been found in aio-libs aiohttp up to 3.9.1. Affected is an unknown part of the component Symbolic Links Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a path traversal vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-22. The product uses external input to construct a pathname that is intended to identify a file or directory that is located underneath a restricted parent directory, but the product does not properly neutralize special elements within the pathname that can cause the pathname to resolve to a location that is outside of the restricted directory. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality. CVE summarizes:

aiohttp is an asynchronous HTTP client/server framework for asyncio and Python. When using aiohttp as a web server and configuring static routes, it is necessary to specify the root path for static files. Additionally, the option 'follow_symlinks' can be used to determine whether to follow symbolic links outside the static root directory. When 'follow_symlinks' is set to True, there is no validation to check if reading a file is within the root directory. This can lead to directory traversal vulnerabilities, resulting in unauthorized access to arbitrary files on the system, even when symlinks are not present. Disabling follow_symlinks and using a reverse proxy are encouraged mitigations. Version 3.9.2 fixes this issue.

The weakness was published 01/30/2024 as GHSA-5h86-8mv2-jq9f. The advisory is shared for download at github.com. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2024-23334 since 01/15/2024. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1006.

The exploit is shared for download at exploit-db.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 212515 (Debian dsa-5828 : python-aiohttp-doc - security update), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.

Upgrading to version 3.9.2 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch 1c335944d6a8b1298baf179b7c0b3069f10c514b is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at github.com. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Exploit-DB (52474), Tenable (212515) and CERT Bund (WID-SEC-2024-0949). VulDB is the best source for vulnerability data and more expert information about this specific topic.
