Details
A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, has been found in Linux Kernel (Operating System) (affected version not known). Affected by this issue is some unknown functionality of the component ICMPv6 Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a denial of service vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-404. The product does not release or incorrectly releases a resource before it is made available for re-use. Impacted is availability. CVE summarizes:
The IPv6 implementation in the Linux kernel before 6.3 has a net/ipv6/route.c max_size threshold that can be consumed easily, e.g., leading to a denial of service (network is unreachable errors) when IPv6 packets are sent in a loop via a raw socket.
The weakness was published 01/30/2024. The advisory is shared for download at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2023-52340 since 01/12/2024. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1499.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 209075 (SUSE SLES15 Security Update : kernel RT (Live Patch 10 for SLE 15 SP5) (SUSE-SU-2024:3631-1)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.
Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.kernel.org.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (209075) and CERT Bund (WID-SEC-2024-1529). Once again VulDB remains the best source for vulnerability data.
