Details
A vulnerability has been found in opencontainers runc up to 1.1.11 on Linux (Virtualization Software) and classified as critical. This vulnerability affects an unknown functionality of the component Internal File Descriptor Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a file descriptor vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-403. A process does not close sensitive file descriptors before invoking a child process, which allows the child to perform unauthorized I/O operations using those descriptors. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
runc is a CLI tool for spawning and running containers on Linux according to the OCI specification. In runc 1.1.11 and earlier, due to an internal file descriptor leak, an attacker could cause a newly-spawned container process (from runc exec) to have a working directory in the host filesystem namespace, allowing for a container escape by giving access to the host filesystem ("attack 2"). The same attack could be used by a malicious image to allow a container process to gain access to the host filesystem through runc run ("attack 1"). Variants of attacks 1 and 2 could be also be used to overwrite semi-arbitrary host binaries, allowing for complete container escapes ("attack 3a" and "attack 3b"). runc 1.1.12 includes patches for this issue.
The weakness was released 02/01/2024 as GHSA-xr7r-f8xq-vfvv. The advisory is available at github.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2024-21626 since 12/29/2023. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not available.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 208601 (CentOS 7 : docker (RHSA-2024:1270)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.
Upgrading to version 1.1.12 eliminates this vulnerability. The upgrade is hosted for download at github.com. Applying the patch 02120488a4c0fc487d1ed2867e901eeed7ce8ecf is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at github.com.
