Details
A vulnerability classified as critical has been found in mate-desktop engrampa (affected version unknown). This affects an unknown functionality. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a path traversal vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-25. The product uses external input to construct a pathname that should be within a restricted directory, but it does not properly neutralize "/../" sequences that can resolve to a location that is outside of that directory. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
Engrampa is an archive manager for the MATE environment. Engrampa is found to be vulnerable to a Path Traversal vulnerability that can be leveraged to achieve full Remote Command Execution (RCE) on the target. While handling CPIO archives, the Engrampa Archive manager follows symlink, cpio by default will follow stored symlinks while extracting and the Archiver will not check the symlink location, which leads to arbitrary file writes to unintended locations. When the victim extracts the archive, the attacker can craft a malicious cpio or ISO archive to achieve RCE on the target system. This vulnerability was fixed in commit 63d5dfa.
The weakness was published 02/05/2024 as GHSA-c98h-v39w-3r7v. It is possible to read the advisory at github.com. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2023-52138 since 12/28/2023. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available. The attack technique deployed by this issue is T1006 according to MITRE ATT&CK.
Applying the patch 63d5dfa9005c6b16d0f0ccd888cc859fca78f970 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at github.com.
