Summary
A vulnerability was found in cryptography on Python and classified as problematic. This issue affects some unknown processing of the component RSA Key Exchange Handler. Such manipulation leads to timing discrepancy. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2023-50782. The attack can be launched remotely. No exploit exists. It is suggested to upgrade the affected component.
Details
A vulnerability was found in cryptography on Python. It has been rated as problematic. Affected by this issue is an unknown code of the component RSA Key Exchange Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a timing discrepancy vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-208. Two separate operations in a product require different amounts of time to complete, in a way that is observable to an actor and reveals security-relevant information about the state of the product, such as whether a particular operation was successful or not. Impacted is confidentiality. CVE summarizes:
A flaw was found in the python-cryptography package. This issue may allow a remote attacker to decrypt captured messages in TLS servers that use RSA key exchanges, which may lead to exposure of confidential or sensitive data.
The weakness was disclosed 02/06/2024. The advisory is shared for download at access.redhat.com. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2023-50782 since 12/13/2023. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1592.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 209835 (SUSE SLES12 Security Update : openssl-1_1 (SUSE-SU-2024:3757-1)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.
Upgrading to version 42.0.0 eliminates this vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (209835) and EUVD (EUVD-2024-0496). VulDB is the best source for vulnerability data and more expert information about this specific topic.
