A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, has been found in Apple QuickTime up to 7.1.2 (Multimedia Player Software). This issue affects an unknown code of the component FLC Movie Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a heap-based overflow vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-122. A heap overflow condition is a buffer overflow, where the buffer that can be overwritten is allocated in the heap portion of memory, generally meaning that the buffer was allocated using a routine such as malloc(). Heap-based buffer overflow in Apple QuickTime before 7.1.3 allows user-assisted remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via the COLOR_64 chunk in a FLIC (FLC) movie.
The bug was discovered 09/12/2006. The weakness was released 09/13/2006 by Mike Price and Ruben Santamarta (Sowhat) with McAfee AVERT Labs (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at docs.info.apple.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2006-4384 since 08/28/2006. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available.

Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at apple.com. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published 1 days after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
