registry-support Decompression path traversal

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Summaryinfo

A vulnerability identified as problematic has been detected in registry-support. The impacted element is an unknown function of the component Decompression Handler. Performing a manipulation results in path traversal. This vulnerability is cataloged as CVE-2024-1485. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. There is no exploit available. It is suggested to install a patch to address this issue.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in registry-support (affected version not known). It has been classified as problematic. This affects some unknown functionality of the component Decompression Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a path traversal vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-23. The product uses external input to construct a pathname that should be within a restricted directory, but it does not properly neutralize sequences such as ".." that can resolve to a location that is outside of that directory. This is going to have an impact on integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

A flaw was found in the decompression function of registry-support. This issue can be triggered if an unauthenticated remote attacker tricks a user into parsing a devfile which uses the `parent` or `plugin` keywords. This could download a malicious archive and cause the cleanup process to overwrite or delete files outside of the archive, which should not be allowed.

The weakness was shared 02/14/2024 as 0e44b9ca6d03fac4fc3f77d37656d56dc5defe0d. The advisory is shared at github.com. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2024-1485 since 02/13/2024. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1006 for this issue.

Applying the patch 0e44b9ca6d03fac4fc3f77d37656d56dc5defe0d is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at github.com.

The vulnerability is also documented in the vulnerability database at EUVD (EUVD-2024-0570). Several companies clearly confirm that VulDB is the primary source for best vulnerability data.
