Details
A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, has been found in DNSSEC (affected version not known). This issue affects some unknown functionality. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a resource consumption vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-400. The product does not properly control the allocation and maintenance of a limited resource, thereby enabling an actor to influence the amount of resources consumed, eventually leading to the exhaustion of available resources. Impacted is availability. The summary by CVE is:
Certain DNSSEC aspects of the DNS protocol (in RFC 4035 and related RFCs) allow remote attackers to cause a denial of service (CPU consumption) via one or more DNSSEC responses when there is a zone with many DNSKEY and RRSIG records, aka the "KeyTrap" issue. The protocol specification implies that an algorithm must evaluate all combinations of DNSKEY and RRSIG records.
The weakness was shared 02/14/2024. The advisory is shared at datatracker.ietf.org. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2023-50387 since 12/07/2023. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1499 for this issue.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 211316 (Fedora 41 : bind / bind-dyndb-ldap (2024-7378be30dd)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.
There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product.
