FreeBSD IEEE 802.11s Mesh ID heap-based overflow

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Summaryinfo

A vulnerability was found in FreeBSD. It has been rated as critical. The affected element is an unknown function of the component IEEE 802.11s Mesh ID Handler. This manipulation causes heap-based overflow. This vulnerability is tracked as CVE-2022-23088. The attack is possible to be carried out remotely. No exploit exists. It is suggested to install a patch to address this issue.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in FreeBSD (Operating System) (version unknown). It has been declared as critical. Affected by this vulnerability is an unknown function of the component IEEE 802.11s Mesh ID Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a heap-based overflow vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-122. A heap overflow condition is a buffer overflow, where the buffer that can be overwritten is allocated in the heap portion of memory, generally meaning that the buffer was allocated using a routine such as malloc(). As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

The 802.11 beacon handling routine failed to validate the length of an IEEE 802.11s Mesh ID before copying it to a heap-allocated buffer. While a FreeBSD Wi-Fi client is in scanning mode (i.e., not associated with a SSID) a malicious beacon frame may overwrite kernel memory, leading to remote code execution.

The weakness was disclosed 02/15/2024 by M00nbsd. The advisory is shared at security.freebsd.org. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2022-23088 since 01/10/2022. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available. The price for an exploit might be around USD $5k-$25k at the moment (estimation calculated on 06/05/2025).

Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem.
