Details
A vulnerability was found in FreeBSD (Operating System) (version unknown) and classified as critical. Affected by this issue is an unknown function of the component lib9p. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
The implementation of lib9p's handling of RWALK messages was missing a bounds check needed when unpacking the message contents. The missing check means that the receipt of a specially crafted message will cause lib9p to overwrite unrelated memory. The bug can be triggered by a malicious bhyve guest kernel to overwrite memory in the bhyve(8) process. This could potentially lead to user-mode code execution on the host, subject to bhyve's Capsicum sandbox.
The weakness was shared 02/15/2024 by Robert Morris. The advisory is shared for download at security.freebsd.org. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2022-23092 since 01/10/2022. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available. The current price for an exploit might be approx. USD $0-$5k (estimation calculated on 08/30/2024).
