Details
A vulnerability was found in PostgreSQL pgjdbc up to 42.7.1 (Database Software). It has been rated as critical. This issue affects an unknown code block of the component Simple Query Mode. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a sql injection vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-89. The product constructs all or part of an SQL command using externally-influenced input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special elements that could modify the intended SQL command when it is sent to a downstream component. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
pgjdbc, the PostgreSQL JDBC Driver, allows attacker to inject SQL if using PreferQueryMode=SIMPLE. Note this is not the default. In the default mode there is no vulnerability. A placeholder for a numeric value must be immediately preceded by a minus. There must be a second placeholder for a string value after the first placeholder; both must be on the same line. By constructing a matching string payload, the attacker can inject SQL to alter the query, bypassing the protections that parameterized queries bring against SQL Injection attacks. Versions before 42.7.2, 42.6.1, 42.5.5, 42.4.4, 42.3.9, and 42.2.8 are affected.
The weakness was published 02/19/2024 as GHSA-24rp-q3w6-vc56. The advisory is shared at github.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2024-1597 since 02/16/2024. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1505 for this issue.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 213039 (Debian dla-3995 : libpostgresql-jdbc-java - security update), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.
Upgrading to version 42.2.8, 42.3.9, 42.4.4, 42.5.5, 42.6.1 or 42.7.2 eliminates this vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the vulnerability database at Tenable (213039). Several companies clearly confirm that VulDB is the primary source for best vulnerability data.
