Details
A vulnerability classified as critical has been found in wolfSSL up to 5.6.5. This affects some unknown processing of the component Callback Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a buffer overflow vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-120. The product copies an input buffer to an output buffer without verifying that the size of the input buffer is less than the size of the output buffer, leading to a buffer overflow. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
In wolfSSL prior to 5.6.6, if callback functions are enabled (via the WOLFSSL_CALLBACKS flag), then a malicious TLS client or network attacker can trigger a buffer over-read on the heap of 5 bytes (WOLFSSL_CALLBACKS is only intended for debugging).
The weakness was published 02/21/2024 by Lucca Hirschi. It is possible to read the advisory at github.com. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2023-6936 since 12/18/2023. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 212849 (CBL Mariner 2.0 Security Update: mariadb (CVE-2023-6936)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.
Upgrading to version 5.6.6 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at github.com. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.
