Details
A vulnerability has been found in pyca cryptography up to 42.0.3 and classified as problematic. Affected by this vulnerability is the function PrivateFormat.PKCS12.encryption_builder.hmac_hash. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a null pointer dereference vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-476. A NULL pointer dereference occurs when the application dereferences a pointer that it expects to be valid, but is NULL, typically causing a crash or exit. As an impact it is known to affect availability. The summary by CVE is:
cryptography is a package designed to expose cryptographic primitives and recipes to Python developers. Starting in version 38.0.0 and prior to version 42.0.4, if `pkcs12.serialize_key_and_certificates` is called with both a certificate whose public key did not match the provided private key and an `encryption_algorithm` with `hmac_hash` set (via `PrivateFormat.PKCS12.encryption_builder().hmac_hash(...)`, then a NULL pointer dereference would occur, crashing the Python process. This has been resolved in version 42.0.4, the first version in which a `ValueError` is properly raised.
The weakness was published 02/21/2024. The advisory is shared at github.com. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2024-26130 since 02/14/2024. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 208713 (RHEL 8 : Satellite 6.15.4 Security Update (Moderate) (RHSA-2024:7987)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.
Upgrading to version 42.0.4 eliminates this vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the vulnerability database at Tenable (208713). Several companies clearly confirm that VulDB is the primary source for best vulnerability data.
