Linux Kernel up to 6.7.1 on ARM64 vgic-its vgic_its_check_cache use after free

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, was found in Linux Kernel up to 6.7.1 on ARM64 (Operating System). This affects the function vgic_its_check_cache of the component vgic-its. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a use after free vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-416. Referencing memory after it has been freed can cause a program to crash, use unexpected values, or execute code. The impact remains unknown. The summary by CVE is:

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: KVM: arm64: vgic-its: Avoid potential UAF in LPI translation cache There is a potential UAF scenario in the case of an LPI translation cache hit racing with an operation that invalidates the cache, such as a DISCARD ITS command. The root of the problem is that vgic_its_check_cache() does not elevate the refcount on the vgic_irq before dropping the lock that serializes refcount changes. Have vgic_its_check_cache() raise the refcount on the returned vgic_irq and add the corresponding decrement after queueing the interrupt.

The weakness was released 02/23/2024. It is possible to read the advisory at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2024-26598 since 02/19/2024. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 209097 (RHEL 8 : kernel (RHSA-2024:8161)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.

Upgrading to version 5.4.269, 5.10.209, 5.15.148, 6.1.75, 6.6.14, 6.7.2 or 6.8-rc1 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch d04acadb6490/ba7be6667408/12c2759ab134/dba788e25f05/65b201bf3e9a/dd3956a1b3dd/ad362fe07fec is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.kernel.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (209097) and EUVD (EUVD-2024-23860). Be aware that VulDB is the high quality source for vulnerability data.
