fastecdsa up to 2.3.1 src/curveMath.c curvemath_mul uninitialized variable

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in fastecdsa up to 2.3.1 and classified as problematic. This issue affects the function curvemath_mul of the file src/curveMath.c. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a uninitialized variable vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-457. The code uses a variable that has not been initialized, leading to unpredictable or unintended results. Impacted is availability. The summary by CVE is:

Versions of the package fastecdsa before 2.3.2 are vulnerable to Use of Uninitialized Variable on the stack, via the curvemath_mul function in src/curveMath.c, due to being used and interpreted as user-defined type. Depending on the variable's actual value it could be arbitrary free(), arbitrary realloc(), null pointer dereference and other. Since the stack can be controlled by the attacker, the vulnerability could be used to corrupt allocator structure, leading to possible heap exploitation. The attacker could cause denial of service by exploiting this vulnerability.

The weakness was disclosed 02/24/2024 as 57fc5689c95d649dab7ef60cc99ac64589f01e36. It is possible to read the advisory at github.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2024-21502 since 12/22/2023. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 214445 (Amazon Corretto Java 11.x < 11.0.26.4.1 Vulnerability), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.

Upgrading to version 2.3.2 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch 57fc5689c95d649dab7ef60cc99ac64589f01e36 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at github.com. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.
