Linux Kernel up to 6.7.1 syscon of_syscon_register null pointer dereference

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

The affected element is the function of_syscon_register of the component syscon. The manipulation leads to null pointer dereference. This vulnerability is documented as CVE-2023-52467. There is not any exploit available. You should upgrade the affected component.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, has been found in Linux Kernel up to 5.10.208/5.15.147/6.1.74/6.6.13/6.7.1 (Operating System). This issue affects the function of_syscon_register of the component syscon. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a null pointer dereference vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-476. A NULL pointer dereference occurs when the application dereferences a pointer that it expects to be valid, but is NULL, typically causing a crash or exit. Impacted is availability. The summary by CVE is:

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: mfd: syscon: Fix null pointer dereference in of_syscon_register() kasprintf() returns a pointer to dynamically allocated memory which can be NULL upon failure.

The weakness was released 02/25/2024. It is possible to read the advisory at git.kernel.org. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2023-52467 since 02/20/2024. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 210815 (RHEL 9 : kernel (RHSA-2024:9315)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.

Upgrading to version 5.10.209, 5.15.148, 6.1.75, 6.6.14, 6.7.2 or 6.8-rc1 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch 927626a20738/c3e3a2144bf5/527e8c5f3d00/3ef1130deee9/7f2c410ac470/41673c66b3d0 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.kernel.org.
