A vulnerability was found in FlatNuke 2.5.3 (Content Management System). It has been classified as problematic. Affected is an unknown part of the file thumb.php of the component Installation. The manipulation of the argument image with an unknown input leads to a path traversal vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-22. The product uses external input to construct a pathname that is intended to identify a file or directory that is located underneath a restricted parent directory, but the product does not properly neutralize special elements within the pathname that can cause the pathname to resolve to a location that is outside of the restricted directory. Directory traversal vulnerability in thumb.php in FlatNuke 2.5.3 allows remote attackers to read arbitrary images or obtain the installation path via the image parameter.
The weakness was released 06/09/2005 (Website). The advisory is shared for download at secwatch.org. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2005-1896 since 06/08/2005. The exploitability is told to be easy. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1006.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. By approaching the search of inurl:thumb.php it is possible to find vulnerable targets with Google Hacking.
Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem.
