Linux Kernel up to 4.20.14 netlabel cipso_v4_map_lvl_valid out-of-bounds

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, has been found in Linux Kernel up to 4.20.14 (Operating System). This issue affects the function cipso_v4_map_lvl_valid of the component netlabel. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a out-of-bounds vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-125. The product reads data past the end, or before the beginning, of the intended buffer. Impacted is confidentiality. The summary by CVE is:

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: netlabel: fix out-of-bounds memory accesses There are two array out-of-bounds memory accesses, one in cipso_v4_map_lvl_valid(), the other in netlbl_bitmap_walk(). Both errors are embarassingly simple, and the fixes are straightforward. As a FYI for anyone backporting this patch to kernels prior to v4.8, you'll want to apply the netlbl_bitmap_walk() patch to cipso_v4_bitmap_walk() as netlbl_bitmap_walk() doesn't exist before Linux v4.8.

The weakness was presented 02/26/2024. It is possible to read the advisory at git.kernel.org. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2019-25160. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 239841 (TencentOS Server 4: kernel (TSSA-2024:0960)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.

Upgrading to version 3.16.66, 3.18.137, 4.4.177, 4.9.163, 4.14.106, 4.19.28, 4.20.15 or 5.0 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch 97bc3683c249/c61d01faa555/dc18101f95fa/1c973f9c7cc2/fcfe700acdc1/e3713abc4248/fbf9578919d6/5578de4834fe is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.kernel.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.
