Linux Kernel up to 5.11.15 on ARM footbridge pci_assign_irq privilege escalation

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability classified as problematic has been found in Linux Kernel up to 5.11.15 on ARM (Operating System). Affected is the function pci_assign_irq of the component footbridge. The impact remains unknown. CVE summarizes:

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: ARM: footbridge: fix PCI interrupt mapping Since commit 30fdfb929e82 ("PCI: Add a call to pci_assign_irq() in pci_device_probe()"), the PCI code will call the IRQ mapping function whenever a PCI driver is probed. If these are marked as __init, this causes an oops if a PCI driver is loaded or bound after the kernel has initialised.

The weakness was shared 02/27/2024. The advisory is shared for download at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2021-46909 since 02/25/2024. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available.

Upgrading to version 4.14.232, 4.19.189, 5.4.114, 5.10.32, 5.11.16 or 5.12 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch 532747fd5c7a/2643da6aa579/871b569a3e67/1fc087fdb98d/c3efce8cc980/30e3b4f256b4 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.kernel.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.
