Details
A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, has been found in Linux Kernel up to 5.12.4 (Operating System). Affected by this issue is the function acpi_device_set_name of the component ACPI. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory leak vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-401. The product does not sufficiently track and release allocated memory after it has been used, which slowly consumes remaining memory. Impacted is availability. CVE summarizes:
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: ACPI: scan: Fix a memory leak in an error handling path If 'acpi_device_set_name()' fails, we must free 'acpi_device_bus_id->bus_id' or there is a (potential) memory leak.
The weakness was released 02/28/2024. The advisory is available at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2021-46985 since 02/27/2024. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 239742 (TencentOS Server 2: kernel (TSSA-2024:1030)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.
Upgrading to version 4.9.269, 4.14.233, 4.19.191, 5.4.120, 5.10.38, 5.11.22, 5.12.5 or 5.13 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch 6901a4f795e0/5ab9857dde7c/69cc821e89ce/dafd4c0b5e83/e2381174daea/c5c8f6ffc942/a7e17a8d421a/0c8bd174f0fc is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.kernel.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.
