Details
A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel up to 5.12.4 (Operating System) and classified as critical. Affected by this issue is the function mcp251xfd_probe of the component mcp251xfd. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a null pointer dereference vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-476. A NULL pointer dereference occurs when the application dereferences a pointer that it expects to be valid, but is NULL, typically causing a crash or exit. Impacted is availability. CVE summarizes:
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: can: mcp251xfd: mcp251xfd_probe(): fix an error pointer dereference in probe When we converted this code to use dev_err_probe() we accidentally removed a return. It means that if devm_clk_get() it will lead to an Oops when we call clk_get_rate() on the next line.
The weakness was presented 02/28/2024. The advisory is available at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2021-46995 since 02/27/2024. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit.
Upgrading to version 5.12.5 or 5.13 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch 15f8f96ec7fc/4cc7faa40697 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.kernel.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.
