Linux Kernel up to 5.10.36/5.11.20/5.12.3 on PPC64 privilege escalation

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel up to 5.10.36/5.11.20/5.12.3 on PPC64 (Operating System). It has been rated as problematic. The impact remains unknown. The summary by CVE is:

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: powerpc/64: Fix the definition of the fixmap area At the time being, the fixmap area is defined at the top of the address space or just below KASAN. This definition is not valid for PPC64. For PPC64, use the top of the I/O space. Because of circular dependencies, it is not possible to include asm/fixmap.h in asm/book3s/64/pgtable.h , so define a fixed size AREA at the top of the I/O space for fixmap and ensure during build that the size is big enough.

The weakness was shared 02/28/2024. It is possible to read the advisory at git.kernel.org. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2021-47018 since 02/27/2024. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available.

Upgrading to version 5.10.37, 5.11.21, 5.12.4 or 5.13 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch 4b9fb2c9039a/abb07dc5e8b6/a84df7c80bda/9ccba66d4d2a is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.kernel.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.
