Microsoft Internet Explorer up to 6 VML Vector Markup Language fill memory corruption

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in Microsoft Internet Explorer up to 6 (Web Browser) and classified as critical. Affected by this issue is the function fill of the component VML Vector Markup Language Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

Stack-based buffer overflow in the Vector Graphics Rendering engine (vgx.dll), as used in Microsoft Outlook and Internet Explorer 6.0 on Windows XP SP2, and possibly other versions, allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via a Vector Markup Language (VML) file with a long fill parameter within a rect tag.

The weakness was disclosed 09/19/2006 by Eric Sites with Sunbelt Software as MS06-055 (Website). The advisory is shared for download at sunbeltblog.blogspot.com. The public release happened without coordination with the vendor. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2006-4868 since 09/19/2006. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. Successful exploitation requires user interaction by the victim. Technical details as well as a public exploit are known.

A public exploit has been developed by jamikazu and been published immediately after the advisory. The exploit is available at downloads.securityfocus.com. It is declared as attacked. As 0-day the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 22449 (MS06-055: Vulnerability in Vector Markup Language Could Allow Remote Code Execution (925486)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows : Microsoft Bulletins and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 90351 (Vulnerability in Vector Markup Language Could Allow Remote Code Execution (MS06-055)).

Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at windowsupdate.microsoft.com. A possible mitigation has been published 1 weeks after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Attack attempts may be identified with Snort ID 8416. In this case the pattern |3A|fill is used for detection. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 4715.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (29004), Exploit-DB (2425), Zero-Day.cz (120), Tenable (22449) and SecurityFocus (BID 20096†). blog.washingtonpost.com is providing further details.
