Linux Kernel up to 5.10.209/5.15.148/6.1.75/6.6.14/6.7.2 mhi parse_xfer_event denial of service

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, was found in Linux Kernel up to 5.10.209/5.15.148/6.1.75/6.6.14/6.7.2 (Operating System). This affects the function parse_xfer_event of the component mhi. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a denial of service vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-404. The product does not release or incorrectly releases a resource before it is made available for re-use. This is going to have an impact on availability. The summary by CVE is:

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: bus: mhi: host: Drop chan lock before queuing buffers Ensure read and write locks for the channel are not taken in succession by dropping the read lock from parse_xfer_event() such that a callback given to client can potentially queue buffers and acquire the write lock in that process. Any queueing of buffers should be done without channel read lock acquired as it can result in multiple locks and a soft lockup. [mani: added fixes tag and cc'ed stable]

The weakness was shared 02/29/2024. It is possible to read the advisory at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2023-52493 since 02/20/2024. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit.

Upgrading to version 5.10.210, 5.15.149, 6.1.76, 6.6.15, 6.7.3 or 6.8-rc1 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch 20a6dea2d1c6/6e4c84316e2b/3c5ec66b4b3f/eaefb9464031/b8eff20d8709/01bd694ac2f6 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.kernel.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.
