Linux Kernel up to 5.12.3 soundwire slave_rt_list memory leak

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Summaryinfo

A vulnerability labeled as critical has been found in Linux Kernel up to 4.19.190/5.4.118/5.10.36/5.11.20/5.12.3. This affects the function slave_rt_list of the component soundwire. Such manipulation leads to memory leak. This vulnerability is documented as CVE-2021-47020. There is not any exploit available. The affected component should be upgraded.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel up to 4.19.190/5.4.118/5.10.36/5.11.20/5.12.3 (Operating System). It has been rated as critical. Affected by this issue is the function slave_rt_list of the component soundwire. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory leak vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-401. The product does not sufficiently track and release allocated memory after it has been used, which slowly consumes remaining memory. Impacted is availability. CVE summarizes:

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: soundwire: stream: fix memory leak in stream config error path When stream config is failed, master runtime will release all slave runtime in the slave_rt_list, but slave runtime is not added to the list at this time. This patch frees slave runtime in the config error path to fix the memory leak.

The weakness was released 03/01/2024. The advisory is shared for download at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2021-47020 since 02/27/2024. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available.

Upgrading to version 4.19.191, 5.4.119, 5.10.37, 5.11.21, 5.12.4 or 5.13 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch 342260fe8210/870533403ffa/7c468deae306/2f17ac005b32/effd2bd62b41/48f17f96a817 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.kernel.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.
