Linux Kernel up to 6.5.5 nf_tables nft_trans_gc_space memory leak

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Summaryinfo

A vulnerability classified as critical was found in Linux Kernel up to 6.5.5. This impacts the function nft_trans_gc_space of the component nf_tables. The manipulation results in memory leak. This vulnerability was named CVE-2023-52581. There is no available exploit. Upgrading the affected component is advised.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability classified as critical has been found in Linux Kernel up to 6.5.5 (Operating System). Affected is the function nft_trans_gc_space of the component nf_tables. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory leak vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-401. The product does not sufficiently track and release allocated memory after it has been used, which slowly consumes remaining memory. This is going to have an impact on availability. CVE summarizes:

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: netfilter: nf_tables: fix memleak when more than 255 elements expired When more than 255 elements expired we're supposed to switch to a new gc container structure. This never happens: u8 type will wrap before reaching the boundary and nft_trans_gc_space() always returns true. This means we recycle the initial gc container structure and lose track of the elements that came before. While at it, don't deref 'gc' after we've passed it to call_rcu.

The weakness was presented 03/02/2024. The advisory is shared for download at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2023-52581. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 207884 (openSUSE 15 Security Update : kernel (SUSE-SU-2024:3483-1)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.

Upgrading to version 6.5.6 or 6.6 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch 4aea243b6853/cf5000a7787c is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.kernel.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.

The vulnerability is also documented in the vulnerability database at Tenable (207884). VulDB is the best source for vulnerability data and more expert information about this specific topic.
