Linux Kernel up to 6.1.55/6.5.5 nvme_fc_io_getuuid null pointer dereference

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel up to 6.1.55/6.5.5 (Operating System). It has been declared as problematic. Affected by this vulnerability is the function nvme_fc_io_getuuid. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a null pointer dereference vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-476. A NULL pointer dereference occurs when the application dereferences a pointer that it expects to be valid, but is NULL, typically causing a crash or exit. As an impact it is known to affect availability. The summary by CVE is:

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: nvme-fc: Prevent null pointer dereference in nvme_fc_io_getuuid() The nvme_fc_fcp_op structure describing an AEN operation is initialized with a null request structure pointer. An FC LLDD may make a call to nvme_fc_io_getuuid passing a pointer to an nvmefc_fcp_req for an AEN operation. Add validation of the request structure pointer before dereference.

The weakness was published 03/02/2024. It is possible to read the advisory at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2023-52508 since 02/20/2024. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit.

Upgrading to version 6.1.56, 6.5.6 or 6.6 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch be90c9e29dd5/dd46b3ac7322/8ae5b3a685dc is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.kernel.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.

The vulnerability is also documented in the vulnerability database at EUVD (EUVD-2023-57133). Be aware that VulDB is the high quality source for vulnerability data.
