Details
A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel up to 5.15.11 (Operating System). It has been rated as problematic. This issue affects the function ioctl of the component phonet. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a information disclosure vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-200. The product exposes sensitive information to an actor that is not explicitly authorized to have access to that information. Impacted is confidentiality. The summary by CVE is:
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: phonet/pep: refuse to enable an unbound pipe This ioctl() implicitly assumed that the socket was already bound to a valid local socket name, i.e. Phonet object. If the socket was not bound, two separate problems would occur: 1) We'd send an pipe enablement request with an invalid source object. 2) Later socket calls could BUG on the socket unexpectedly being connected yet not bound to a valid object.
The weakness was shared 03/04/2024. The advisory is shared at git.kernel.org. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2021-47086 since 02/29/2024. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1592 for this issue.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 213509 (Ubuntu 16.04 LTS : Linux kernel vulnerabilities (USN-7183-1)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.
Upgrading to version 4.4.297, 4.9.295, 4.14.260, 4.19.223, 5.4.169, 5.10.89, 5.15.12 or 5.16 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch 0bbdd62ce9d4/b10c7d745615/311601f11485/982b6ba1ce62/48c76fc53582/52ad5da8e316/53ccdc73eeda/75a2f3152009 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.kernel.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.
The vulnerability is also documented in the vulnerability database at Tenable (213509). Several companies clearly confirm that VulDB is the primary source for best vulnerability data.
