Linux Kernel up to 5.17.9 qcom-rng qcom_rng_read infinite loop

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Summaryinfo

A vulnerability described as critical has been identified in Linux Kernel up to 4.19.244/5.4.195/5.10.117/5.15.41/5.17.9. This vulnerability affects the function qcom_rng_read of the component qcom-rng. Such manipulation leads to infinite loop. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2022-48630. There is no exploit available. Upgrading the affected component is recommended.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, has been found in Linux Kernel up to 4.19.244/5.4.195/5.10.117/5.15.41/5.17.9 (Operating System). Affected by this issue is the function qcom_rng_read of the component qcom-rng. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a infinite loop vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-835. The product contains an iteration or loop with an exit condition that cannot be reached, i.e., an infinite loop. Impacted is availability. CVE summarizes:

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: crypto: qcom-rng - fix infinite loop on requests not multiple of WORD_SZ The commit referenced in the Fixes tag removed the 'break' from the else branch in qcom_rng_read(), causing an infinite loop whenever 'max' is not a multiple of WORD_SZ. This can be reproduced e.g. by running: kcapi-rng -b 67 >/dev/null There are many ways to fix this without adding back the 'break', but they all seem more awkward than simply adding it back, so do just that. Tested on a machine with Qualcomm Amberwing processor.

The weakness was shared 03/05/2024. The advisory is shared for download at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2022-48630 since 02/25/2024. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available.

Upgrading to version 4.19.245, 5.4.196, 5.10.118, 5.15.42, 5.17.10 or 5.18 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch 71a89789552b/8be06f62b426/233a3cc60e7a/8a06f25f5941/05d4d17475d8/16287397ec5c is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.kernel.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.
