net-textproto up to 1.21.7/1.22.0 on Go resource consumption

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Summaryinfo

A vulnerability classified as problematic was found in net-textproto up to 1.21.7/1.22.0 on Go. This impacts the function Request.ParseMultipartForm/Request.FormValue/Request.PostFormValue/Request.FormFile. Such manipulation leads to resource consumption. This vulnerability is documented as CVE-2023-45290. There is not any exploit available. Upgrading the affected component is advised.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, has been found in net-textproto up to 1.21.7/1.22.0 on Go. Affected by this issue is the function Request.ParseMultipartForm/Request.FormValue/Request.PostFormValue/Request.FormFile. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a resource consumption vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-400. The product does not properly control the allocation and maintenance of a limited resource, thereby enabling an actor to influence the amount of resources consumed, eventually leading to the exhaustion of available resources. Impacted is availability. CVE summarizes:

When parsing a multipart form (either explicitly with Request.ParseMultipartForm or implicitly with Request.FormValue, Request.PostFormValue, or Request.FormFile), limits on the total size of the parsed form were not applied to the memory consumed while reading a single form line. This permits a maliciously crafted input containing very long lines to cause allocation of arbitrarily large amounts of memory, potentially leading to memory exhaustion. With fix, the ParseMultipartForm function now correctly limits the maximum size of form lines.

The weakness was released 03/06/2024. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2023-45290 since 10/06/2023. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 207754 (AlmaLinux 8 : container-tools:rhel8 (ALSA-2024:6969)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.

Upgrading to version 1.21.8 or 1.22.1 eliminates this vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the vulnerability database at Tenable (207754). Once again VulDB remains the best source for vulnerability data.
