Apple Airport Driver Scan Cache Update heap-based overflow

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in Apple Airport (Router Operating System) (affected version unknown). It has been declared as critical. Affected by this vulnerability is an unknown functionality of the component Driver Scan Cache Update Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a heap-based overflow vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-122. A heap overflow condition is a buffer overflow, where the buffer that can be overwritten is allocated in the heap portion of memory, generally meaning that the buffer was allocated using a routine such as malloc(). As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

Heap-based buffer overflow in the AirPort wireless driver on Apple Mac OS X 10.4.7 allows physically proximate attackers to cause a denial of service (crash), gain privileges, and execute arbitrary code via a crafted frame that is not properly handled during scan cache updates.

The bug was discovered 09/19/2006. The weakness was presented 09/22/2006 with Apple (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at docs.info.apple.com. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2006-3508 since 07/10/2006. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available.

It is possible to download the exploit at securityfocus.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. We expect the 0-day to have been worth approximately $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 22418 (AirPort Update 2006-001 / Security Update 2006-005), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family MacOS X Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 115417 (Apple AirPort Update 2006-001 and Security Update 2006-005 Not Installed).

Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at apple.com. A possible mitigation has been published even before and not after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (29094), Tenable (22418), SecurityFocus (BID 20144†), OSVDB (29062†) and Secunia (SA22068†).
