Details
A vulnerability has been found in Linux Kernel up to 5.10.42/5.12.9 and classified as problematic. Affected by this vulnerability is the function rename_exchange of the component btrfs. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a injection vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-74. The product constructs all or part of a command, data structure, or record using externally-influenced input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special elements that could modify how it is parsed or interpreted when it is sent to a downstream component. The impact remains unknown. The summary by CVE is:
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: btrfs: abort in rename_exchange if we fail to insert the second ref Error injection stress uncovered a problem where we'd leave a dangling inode ref if we failed during a rename_exchange. This happens because we insert the inode ref for one side of the rename, and then for the other side. If this second inode ref insert fails we'll leave the first one dangling and leave a corrupt file system behind. Fix this by aborting if we did the insert for the first inode ref.
The advisory is shared at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2021-47113 since 03/04/2024. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1055 for this issue.
Upgrading to version 5.10.43, 5.12.10 or 5.13 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch 0df50d47d174/ff8de2cec65a/dc09ef356272 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.kernel.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.
