Linux Kernel up to 6.7.3 pstore denial of service

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability classified as critical was found in Linux Kernel up to 6.7.3. This vulnerability affects an unknown code block of the component pstore. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a denial of service vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-404. The product does not release or incorrectly releases a resource before it is made available for re-use. As an impact it is known to affect availability. CVE summarizes:

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: pstore/ram: Fix crash when setting number of cpus to an odd number When the number of cpu cores is adjusted to 7 or other odd numbers, the zone size will become an odd number. The address of the zone will become: addr of zone0 = BASE addr of zone1 = BASE + zone_size addr of zone2 = BASE + zone_size*2 ... The address of zone1/3/5/7 will be mapped to non-alignment va. Eventually crashes will occur when accessing these va. So, use ALIGN_DOWN() to make sure the zone size is even to avoid this bug.

The advisory is available at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability was named CVE-2023-52619 since 03/06/2024. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not available.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 210815 (RHEL 9 : kernel (RHSA-2024:9315)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.

Upgrading to version 4.19.307, 5.4.269, 5.10.210, 5.15.149, 6.1.77, 6.6.16, 6.7.4 or 6.8 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch 8b69c30f4e8b/e9f6ac508901/a63e48cd835c/2a37905d47bf/75b0f71b26b3/0593cfd321df/cd40e43f870c/d49270a04623 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.kernel.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.
