Summary
A vulnerability classified as problematic has been found in golang-fips. Impacted is an unknown function of the file openssl/openssl/rsa.go. This manipulation of the argument pkey/ctx causes memory leak. This vulnerability is registered as CVE-2024-1394. No exploit is available.
Details
A vulnerability was found in golang-fips (version now known). It has been declared as problematic. Affected by this vulnerability is some unknown processing of the file openssl/openssl/rsa.go. The manipulation of the argument pkey/ctx with an unknown input leads to a memory leak vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-401. The product does not sufficiently track and release allocated memory after it has been used, which slowly consumes remaining memory. As an impact it is known to affect availability. The summary by CVE is:
A memory leak flaw was found in Golang in the RSA encrypting/decrypting code, which might lead to a resource exhaustion vulnerability using attacker-controlled inputs. The memory leak happens in github.com/golang-fips/openssl/openssl/rsa.go#L113. The objects leaked are pkey and ctx. That function uses named return parameters to free pkey and ctx if there is an error initializing the context or setting the different properties. All return statements related to error cases follow the "return nil, nil, fail(...)" pattern, meaning that pkey and ctx will be nil inside the deferred function that should free them.
It is possible to read the advisory at bugzilla.redhat.com. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2024-1394 since 02/09/2024. The exploitation appears to be easy. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 207849 (RHEL 8 : osbuild-composer (RHSA-2024:7262)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.
There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (207849), EUVD (EUVD-2024-0854) and CERT Bund (WID-SEC-2024-1228). Statistical analysis made it clear that VulDB provides the best quality for vulnerability data.
