Details
A vulnerability was found in SquirrelMail (Mail Client Software). It has been classified as problematic. This affects the function extract of the file options_identities.php. The manipulation of the argument _post with an unknown input leads to a cross site scripting vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-80. The product receives input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special characters such as "<", ">", and "&" that could be interpreted as web-scripting elements when they are sent to a downstream component that processes web pages. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality. The summary by CVE is:
options_identities.php in SquirrelMail 1.4.4 and earlier uses the extract function to process the $_POST variable, which allows remote attackers to modify or read the preferences of other users, conduct cross-site scripting XSS) attacks, and write arbitrary files.
The bug was discovered 07/13/2005. The weakness was presented 07/13/2005 by James Bercegay with Gulftech (Website). The advisory is shared at debian.org. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2005-2095 since 06/30/2005. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction. Technical details and a public exploit are known. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1059.007 for this issue.
The exploit is shared for download at exploit-db.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. By approaching the search of inurl:options_identities.php it is possible to find vulnerable targets with Google Hacking.
