Firefox before 1.0.5, Thunderbird before 1.0.5, Mozilla before 1.7.9, Netscape 8.0.2, and K-Meleon 0.9 runs XBL scripts even when Javascript has been disabled, which makes it easier for remote attackers to bypass such protection.

The weakness was released 07/13/2005 by Matthew Mastracci (moz_bug_r_a4) as MFSA2005-46 as not defined advisory (Website). The advisory is available at mozilla.org. This vulnerability was named CVE-2005-2261 since 07/13/2005. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available.

It is declared as proof-of-concept. As 0-day the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 21949 (CentOS 4 : firefox (CESA-2005:586)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.
