Mozilla Firefox up to 1.0.4 callback memory corruption

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, was found in Mozilla Firefox up to 1.0.4 (Web Browser). Affected is the function callback. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. This is going to have an impact on integrity. CVE summarizes:

The InstallTrigger.install method in Firefox before 1.0.5 and Mozilla before 1.7.9 allows remote attackers to execute a callback function in the context of another domain by forcing a page navigation after the install method has been called, which causes the callback to be run in the context of the new page and results in a same origin violation.

The weakness was presented 07/13/2005 by Matthew Mastracci (moz_bug_r_a4) as MFSA2005-48 as not defined advisory (Website). The advisory is shared for download at mozilla.org. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2005-2263 since 07/13/2005. The exploitability is told to be easy. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. Technical details and a public exploit are known.

It is declared as proof-of-concept. As 0-day the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 21949 (CentOS 4 : firefox (CESA-2005:586)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family CentOS Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 117890 (CentOS Security Update for Mozilla (CESA-2005:587)).
