Firefox before 1.0.5, Mozilla before 1.7.9, and Netscape 8.0.2 does not properly verify the associated types of DOM node names within the context of their namespaces, which allows remote attackers to modify certain tag properties, possibly leading to execution of arbitrary script or code, as demonstrated using an XHTML document with IMG tags with custom properties ("XHTML node spoofing").
The weakness was shared 07/13/2005 by Matthew Mastracci (moz_bug_r_a4) as MFSA2005-55 as not defined advisory (Website). The advisory is available at mozilla.org. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2005-2269 since 07/13/2005. The exploitability is told to be easy. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. As 0-day the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 21949 (CentOS 4 : firefox (CESA-2005:586)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family CentOS Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 117890 (CentOS Security Update for Mozilla (CESA-2005:587)).
Upgrading to version 1.0.5 eliminates this vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 3377.
