Details
A vulnerability was found in MIT Kerberos up to 5-1.4.1 (Network Authentication Software). It has been rated as critical. Affected by this issue is the function krb5_recvauth. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
Double free vulnerability in the krb5_recvauth function in MIT Kerberos 5 (krb5) 1.4.1 and earlier allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via certain error conditions.
The bug was discovered 07/12/2005. The weakness was disclosed 07/18/2005 by Magnus Hagander as confirmed advisory (CERT.org). The advisory is available at kb.cert.org. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2005-1689 since 05/24/2005. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 6 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 22462 (HP-UX PHSS_33389 : HP-UX Kerberos Client Remote Unauthenticated Execution of Arbitrary Code (HPSBUX02152 SSRT5973 rev.1)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family HP-UX Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 117882 (CentOS Security Update for krb5 (CESA-2005:567)).
Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. A possible mitigation has been published 2 years after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 9076.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (21055), Tenable (22462), SecurityFocus (BID 14239†), OSVDB (17841†) and Secunia (SA16052†). The entries VDB-25512, VDB-25801 and VDB-22111 are pretty similar. If you want to get best quality of vulnerability data, you may have to visit VulDB.
