Details
A vulnerability has been found in Linux Kernel up to 6.6.14/6.7.2 and classified as critical. Affected by this vulnerability is the function napi_poll of the component mlx5e. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a null pointer dereference vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-476. A NULL pointer dereference occurs when the application dereferences a pointer that it expects to be valid, but is NULL, typically causing a crash or exit. As an impact it is known to affect availability. The summary by CVE is:
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: net/mlx5e: Fix operation precedence bug in port timestamping napi_poll context Indirection (*) is of lower precedence than postfix increment (++). Logic in napi_poll context would cause an out-of-bound read by first increment the pointer address by byte address space and then dereference the value. Rather, the intended logic was to dereference first and then increment the underlying value.
It is possible to read the advisory at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2023-52626 since 03/06/2024. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit.
Upgrading to version 6.6.15, 6.7.3 or 6.8 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch 40e0d0746390/33cdeae8c6fb/3876638b2c7e is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.kernel.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.
